Project Still in Progress

Project Summary

We have not used this bathroom 1 time since we bought the house (unless you count the storage of boxes as use!) The size of the bathtub was only something you would bathe a dog in. We know we will have to update this bathroom in order to sell the house....so why not do it now and we can enjoy it while we still live here. Everything must go. We will take it down to the studs and subfloor...and then start all over.

Day 1, DEMO

January 12, 2008

We removed the vanity, mirror and medicine cabinet. Time to bust through the walls! The entire bath enclosure is tile, as are the rest of the walls in the bathroom. Underneath the tile we found a thick layer of concrete, set on top of wire. Busting through the tile was a fun job but the dust, and in such a small area made breathing difficult. There were tons of tile and concrete pieces everywhere. We filled up lawn bags and Nick carried them all outside to be taken to the dumpster. (That was a whole additional chore in itself)By the end of the day when we ran out of lawn bags we had completely gotten through to the studs on most of the shower wall and all the rest of the walls.

Day 2, More Demo

January 13, 2008We woke up the next morning and muscles we didn't even know we had, ached; literally down to our finger tips. We got more lawn bags, took down the remaining tile and all the sheetrock, bagged all the rubble and called it a day!

After a vacation in paradise, our first weekend back we got right back to work. It was time to remove the toilet the bathtub and the floor. I took the toilet apart and disconnected it from the floor...that plumbers wax is some gross stuff (I was so proud of myself for taking it apart though!!) Now that the toilet was gone, Nick busted out all the framing that the tub was enclosed in, and started breaking through the tile and concrete that was on the floor. I followed him around with a dustpan and broom cleaning up all the tile and cement debris. Once the floor was all cleaned up, all that was left was the tub. With a little help from Daddy, we were able to disconnect the tub from the drain, and slide it out from the wall. However, the tub turned out to be cast iron tub coated with porcelain and was far too heavy for us to carry out of the house, so we will have to wait till tomorrow when we can get some more MAN power!

Being so close to having the bathroom totally emptied down to the studs and subfloor, Nick was determined to get that bathtub outta there. Before I even knew it, Nick was in the bathroom with a sledgehammer and let out some major aggression on that tub. We cleaned it all up, assessed the situation and now have some planning to do.

Time For Planning

January 27, 2008Now that the room was empty we could take measurments. We have 4' x 10' x 8' area to work with. Google Sketch Up is a free program that you can download, that allows you to create models to scale of your project. After spending most of my Sunday on the computer figuring out this program and designing the model, we went to Lowes for inspiration. Next step...plumbing. Be sure to look above the first entry for pages that follow.

You guys look like you're making better progress than me! Cute little tub, my mom has one of those in her house. My all in one plumber & electrician is sadly in jail so I've had to wrangle friends as I can. Not the greatest way to go, hence the much longer time frame than anticipated. I'm now 31+ days past my finish date. Ugh. DD
