Adding Gable Roof to One Level Ranch House
Hello. This weekend I am planning on putting a gable roof on the front of my one level ranch house. I have a few questions before I attempt this... The front of my house, over the door currently has an awning with rod iron post and a flag stone cement floor/base. The floor is about 6 inches thick... In terrible condition.
For the porch I was thinking of replace with concrete blocks and then fill with concrete and put pavers or flag stone over it.... Or do all wood. What would you recommend?
For the gable roof how to I calculate the angle to cut to the width that would lay on the top of the roof/pitch? Would you recommend cutting the shingles or to lay the 2x4 on the current shingles?
My ranch is brick... I plan on putting stucco or stone over the brick that will be under the new roof. The support post I would like them to go into the ground in front of the porch landing and incase them with stone about 3feet from the ground.
Please see the attachment of what I currently have. Also attached is a sample of my goal except I would like the top of the gable roof to be open and hang a light. Does anyone have photos or framing plans, I am a good diy I am just nervous about messing with roofs.

If you are framing with 2x6's, for example, and your roof pitch is 4:12, the base cut on your 2x6 rafters is going to be 17 7/16" long. If it was a large valley, I'd probably lay one 2x6 down (diagonally on the sheathing) as a valley nailer to align the long points of all the seat cuts, and another one down for the edge of all the heels... that way you have something beefy to nail the rafters to. On such a small roof, I don't know that I'd even worry about it.
Add some blocking below the sheathing (between the rafters) instead so that your rafters are nailed to more than just the sheathing, and rest the valley jack rafter seat cut right on the roof sheathing. That way you can frame the point of the seat cut to the chalk line rather than try and figure out how far the valley nailer needs to be away from the chalk line and how the tops of your rafters will plane into the chalk line when they are elevated 1 1/2".
Also attached is a sample of my goal except I would like the top of the gable roof to be open and hang a light.

One thing I should add... it should be obvious that you would seek a permit for this sort of work... if nothing else, to ensure that you don't extend the roofline too far and violate the setback ordinance in your city.

Thank you for the feedback. I already have the permit. I am going to try to mock the picture shown. The support post in the front. I need some help on. I never did this part before. The last gable roof I assisted on making was for my grandparent's ranch. We put the 4x4 into sonotubes.... I want to have mine identical to the picture. Should I put in sonotubes for the two post then pour a footer around this for the stone to rest on since it will be in the "grass"? Or pour a footer build the base up and attach the 4x4 to it? Instead of stone I will be doing stucco. What is the best way to support the roof with the 4x4 into the stucco base? Stucco base construction help....Thanks again!
