Noob question adding new outlet to existing

I'm just looking for some piece of mind to make sure I've got this wired in a way that won't burn my house down

I want to add an outlet to a wall that has only one other outlet. The existing box has two sources going in and back out into the house (to and from where, I don't know).

Am I safe in wiring in this manner? The two outlets\boxes would be wired together about 5 feet apart with another piece of Romex.

Thanks so much guys!

Confused by your second diagram. You seem to have moved one of the cables in the diagram of the existing receptacle. Simple way you would use pigtails at the existing receptacle. Connect wires of the 3 cables to pigtails and the pigtails to the receptacle.

Thanks Ray! I'll get it done that way. Make sense, and is much easier. Do I need to know which one is "power in" and "power out" or does it matter?

No, it doesn't mater which is power in or out since your hooking all cables together.
