DSC 5010 - zone 1 and 2 constantly lit after reset

Hello,

First time poster and knew almost nothing about alarm until a couple days ago...

I recently did a hardware default on my DSC 5010 because I bought this place without the owner telling me what any of the codes are. (She is the second owner and said she doesn't know...)

Luckily there was no installer lockout.

Written on the keypad inside cover, the zones are described as
1. front door - left
2. front door - right
3. window
4. balcony door
5. motion sensor
6. door to garage
7. basement window

So I re-programmed the zones as 01 01 03 03 06 02 03 00.

I was able to also get rid of all trouble codes.

All zones 01 - 07 was lit until I switch to Normally Closed. [013][1].

Afterwards, all zones except zone 01 and zone 02 are working correctly. The door to garage would chime, for example.

However, zone 01 and zone 02 remain lit all the time. I could bypass them and get a ready light.

I tried to examine the contact. Tried to touch it with a magnet. Nothing happens. (Then again, the same magnet did nothing to the door to garage either).

Possible hint:
1. I don't understand why there are "front door - right" and "front door - left". Maybe that means zone 1 and zone 2 need to be configured specially.
2. I don't find 2 contacts on the front door, only one.
3. Opening and closing the front door WAS correctly causing a chime BEFORE I did the hardware reset.
4. I did another hardware reset and still arrived at the same problem.

Could this be a hardware problem?

I took some photos of the door contact: Name: IMG_20170118_194302.jpg

And the panel, taken before I did anything. Note that Zone 1 is NOT connected.Name: IMG_20170115_133444.jpg

Please help! I feel I'm so close!

Thanks,

When you short Z1 and Z2 to common at the panel.... the system is normal ?

I saw your reply before you seemingly edited it, about zone 1 missing. I just set zone 1 to null (00) which got rid of the light (unsurprisingly) but zone 2 is still lit.

Is it there no way for zone 1 to be in use if no wire is going into it? Then the label on the keypad inside cover is misleading then.

Maybe a power cycle or another default will fix zone 2 after I fixed my zone 1 definition.

I will try to short zone 2 now.

I shorted zone 2 at the panel and it becomes normal / closed.

I tried jiggling the wires in zone 2 and COM to see if it is a loose connection but wasn't able to make a difference.

I always go back and re-read a post when I reply to it. It was then that I saw that you knew about nothing on zone 1 so I changed my reply.

Maybe at one time there were two doors ?

I can't explain why the door sensor is not working now. Being an alarm installer I would next pull out the sensor in the jamb to check it. At that time I would also short the two wires and see if the panel set up.

What are the chances of the sensor in the jamb to break down on the day that I did the hardware default? It was working just before

I can try to dig it out but what would I do next? How do I tell that the sensor is broken? I guess I need to get a multi-meter. What do I do if it is NOT broken?

Much thanks,

Exclamation

New information:

I pulled the sensor out from door jamb and short the 2 wires. Nothing happens (zone 2 light remain lit)
Went back to panel and short zone 2 and COM. Zone 2 becomes normal.

The 2 wires out of the sensor actually go into my keypad first.

There are then 4 more wires out of the keypad which go into what I assume to be the panel.

So the problem seems to be in my keypad.

I short the 2 holes in the keypad where the 2 wires from door sensor go in. Nothing happens (zone 2 remains lit).

Now I'm looking at ways to "reset" my keypad or maybe configure it properly.

Problem solved. The door sensor goes through a keypad and this is called a keypad zone. And I needed to use [020] to assign a keypad to a zone number X. If this is done, no wire needs to go into ZONE X on the panel.

That's a feature on DSCs that trip people up. Smart installers note that on the diagram inside the system door; but that's pretty common.
