whats this?
Tearing up a old garden in my back yard to repair my fence. Was originally a box built along the back fence and some of the post after 25years need to be replaced.
I plan to just lay grass along the back fence so I started digging up the top soil and spreading it across my lawn.
Noticed as I dug down there seems to be sand wrapped in plastic along the back fence under the top soil. Also as I got to grass level I see what looks like stone laid and a plastic pipe going from one side and ending at the other. Is this sone drainage system?

I can only imagine. It may be a water retaining system someone installed to keep moisture from leaking past the fence and to stay in the garden area. Can you tell if that membrane is Tyvek or not? I don't think it is an integral part of the yard.

The sand and poly looks like a landscaping weed barrier, maybe just to keep weeds down around the fence line. The pipe looks like someone's idea of a homemade french drain, maybe to drain a swampy area that at one point was holding water.

Were the posts pressure treated ?
My suspicion is that the plastic was to inhibit soil from migrating in and up against the fence post(s) and encouraging rot. The sand by itself probably drains far better without the infiltration of soil. And well drained sand probably doesn't heave with the frost (if you have frost).
