Lowe Deck Boat-what kind of paint?
Lowe deck boat aluminum. Just redid the bottom and now need to know what kind of paint to use? I know it can't contain any copper. Besides that what? The things I read about bottom paint says you have to repaint every few years. Well not like I have a boat lift to do that so hopefully once is enough. Do I use enamel or some kind of acrylic car paint and primer? I have no idea. Boat stays in water 3-4 months each year. Thanks

Yes, fresh water. Hull and up to water line completely covered with gluv-it. That was after 100 new rivets were put in. So really no bare aluminum showing now. Do I need to use primer? Auto body guy who I just talk to said if no bare aluminum then no need for primer. Just scuff and paint with imron or polyurethane. I'm tempted to use primer just for an extra coat on there. I just want to use something that will last, dry super hard and keep the uv rays off the gluv-it. Thanks

It isn't really necessary. The only purpose for bottom paint, aside from possibly adding to the looks for the small part you see above the water line, is to inhibit the growth of aquatics such as algae that will slow the boat and increase fuel usage. If it's only in the water for 3 - 4 months a year and you use the boat regularly that growth shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for all the input. I went with some auto super hard drying fleet urethane metal paint that the body shop supplier recommended. A quart was less than $25!
