Exclamation Strange problem with ford windstar 2001 transmission

I own Ford windstar 2001 Minivan. I bought this vehicle when it had 31k now it has 114k miles. After long travels of 250 miles or more, and after turning off the vehicle, when I turn the vehicle on again and start driving, I cannot drive with the gear on D, when I press the gas pedal the engine become louder but the car wont move. When I switch the gear to 2, or 1, it drives, when I go back to D, the same happens. I have to turn the car off and on 4-5 times until the vehicle operates normal. This started to happen when the car had 33k miles till now. The transmission oil is at the proper level. Do I need to change the tranbsmission oil? or should I get red of this vehicle? Thanks
Andy

That's quite a few miles for a five year old vehicle; over 22k per year. On the other hand, if it's a lot of highway miles, not so bad. I would have the fluid and filter changed. If it hasn't been done recently that's as good a place as any to start. I would also have the codes read; AutoZone will do it for free and there's a chance it will tell you something. Looking at the big picture, I would maybe start looking for a replacement.

I agree with the idea of checking the vehicle for codes. That is a great place to start. I would have this information interpreted by a trained transmission professional. How ever changing the fluid at this time is in my opinion not the place to start. In the event you get the vehicle checked by a transmission specialist and he finds there is an internal problem the first thing they would have to do is drain all that new fluid. Money down the drain. I scan and roadtest peoples cars free of charge everyday of the week at my repair facility I am sure there is someone near you who would do this also. If you get the codes I will be happy to help you figure out the next step if you would like.

Thanks, jaws; I had the chronology backwards. Check codes, THEN maybe fluid & filter.
