1998 Subaru Impreza Differential
My question is: How much can I expect to pay to have it fixed?
Supplementary question is as follows:
This problem has been ongoing for about three years now, and getting steadily worse. When the steering wheel is turned, and I'm moving at a slow speed (i.e. parking lot), the car jerks and makes noises.
My mechanic, about a year ago, was unable to make heads or tails out of it. He pulled my draft shaft and said it was fine. He said he believes it's the differential, and might have been caused because one time, I replaced two rear tires but not the front tires, and therefore the different diameters between the front and the back might have messed it up. I have since replaced all four tires, and it didn't solve the problem.
He says the differential is beyond his realm of expertise on that car, and suggested I see a transmission specialist, and it will probably run close to $2,000. He did say that I can run it as long as possible, because it's not something that will "suddenly break" when I'm on the highway; it will just slowly get worse and worse until it jerks whenever I make a turn.
Well, it's not to that point yet, but I wanted to know what I can expect to pay to have it done, and if it's worth it. The car has 120K on it, which from what I hear is low for a Subaru, and it might have plenty of life in it. My mother was the first owner, and I'm the second, so I know it's been taken care of. I love the way it handles in the snow, which is important in Philly!
Thanks in advance!

Forgot one thing
Is the car a manual or automatic. If it is manual, try to put 2-3 cans of positraction additive.
DO NOT USE POSI GEAR OIL. The additive will help the clutch plates. If it is a auto get your check book out.
Oh yeah this is for the differential only.
