How to repair a gap between ceiling and wall

What is the best way to repair a gap between a wall and ceiling? I have about a 1 in gap between the wall and ceilng over a door in an upstairs hallway and about the same in on of the corners.

A 1" gap is pretty wide, any idea what caused it? 1" is also kind of thin for a piece of drywall. You might be better off taking some setting compound like durabond and prefilling the gap [doesn't need to be perfect but make sure the durabond is in the void and not hanging out] and then taping it once the filler has dried.
