neat 'other' use of a thermostat

Came across this thread:
Connecting Water Bug to EcoBee Thermostat

I have a honeywell RTH6580WF. Wondering if I might be able to do the same? Or is that a special feature to the Ecobee. I really dont want to pay loads of money to my home security system company to hook up sensors (I also dont pay for 'total connect' right now--would like to keep it that way. If I went security system route, I would introduce a new monthly fee)

The Honeywell retail line of thermostats are limited. The WiFi models are also limited.

The Honeywell Redlink line supports this function when used with an EIM.

My Honeywell Redlink Prestige IAQ can be configured to notify me when a water sensor detects water or trip if a float switch detects water.
