Cant remove kitchen faucet; coupler preventing locking nut from unscrewing

I've been trying to replace my kitchen faucet but can not get the locking nut and "U" spacer off, so removal is impossible. I've been looking around the forums and dont see a problem similar to mine. there seems to be a coupler at the end of the threaded post that I can't, for the life of me, remove. Has anybody ever seen this? Could I just cut the threaded post above the coupler? Attached are pictures, there blurry, but I figured they were better than nothing.

Thanks!

Unscrew the spray hose coupling. Then unscrew the retaining nut at the top. With the spray hose coupling removed the retaining nut can come off the bottom.

It can be difficult to get the nut loose in the tight space between the sink and wall so there is a wrench just for the job. I've seen them as cheap as $5 online or $10-$15 at your local home center in the special tools section of the plumbing department.
