Water softener settings for vacation home

I have a new 30K grain GE softener in home used about 1/2 time. We always turn off the well pump when we are not in residence. One GE dealer suggested that we also unplug the softener from power when we leave so that a recharge cycle does not start after we leave and have to then stop mid cycle because the pressure tank has run out of water. We have done this, but then the computer/control seems to lose track of our previous water usage and then immediately recharges when we return whether it is needed or not. I prefer not to waste the salt recharging frequently when not needed. So now I am going to try manually recharging only when the water starts to feel "hard". Any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.

The unit should not start a regen when you ate gone because of lack of water used. I agree with you, you do not have to unplug it. Put the unit on pass instead. If, so some strange reason, it does go into a regen it will not use water.
