3 Advantages of Using a Smart Card Keyboard

by DoItYourself Staff

There are 3 advantages to using a smart card keyboard with your personal computer or laptop. A smart card keyboard is one that uses technology to increase the security of your computer by only recognizing codes or biometric feedback that can only be provided by the owner of the computer. This technology is important and advantageous to the user because it increases the security of the computer, lessens the possibility that an unauthorized user may gain access to sensitive data and makes the computer inoperable if it is ever lost or stolen.

Increasing Security

The security issue is a big concern for many computer users, if not all. Unauthorized access of a person's laptop or personal computer can lead to financial hardship, a corrupted credit file or worse. Smart card keyboards lessen the risk of data being stolen from the computer. The technology uses encryption technology to limit access only to those users who should have access to the machine. Many of these machines can further this security aspect of smart card keyboard through the use of biometric technology. Biometric technology recognizes only the fingerprint of the machine's owner, further limiting access by unauthorized owners.

Lessen Access to Unauthorized Users

The data that many individual computer's contain, whether used for personal or professional purposes, contains elements that are sensitive and would create problems for those whose data is compromised by an unauthorized user. The smart card keyboard reduces this risk by making it exceedingly difficulty to bypass the basic security protections in place for the computer so that an unauthorized user cannot simply pick up the machine and use it at will. Lessening the access to the machine enhances the security capability of the computer and gives the owner an increase feeling of safety and protection.

Making the Computer Inoperable Upon Theft or Loss

If the computer is lost or stolen, the smart card technology can be set up in a way to render the computer inoperable. Because the person who has gained possession of the machine does not have the encrypted password or the biometric signature necessary for the machine to power up. The smart card keyboard and the technology used to identify the rightful user keeps sensitive data completely protected and away from those who may misuse that data or use it in a way that may be harmful to the owner of the machine.

Over the past several years there has been a rash of data theft that was caused by laptops not being properly encrypted for the purpose of keeping sensitive data out of the hands of the wrong people. These incidents of data theft have compromised personal data of individuals and made vulnerable such things as their personal and financial records. The use of a smart card keyboard, although it may not completely eliminate problems associated with data theft and loss, can make it harder for people with unauthorized access gain access to the computer.
