3 Easy Steps for Installing a Sub Panel
The main electrical panel can sometimes become overused, requiring the fitting of an additional or sub panel. Law requires that this type of panel always be fitted before any added circuitry can be installed, but you can install it yourself rather than paying a professional electrician to do it for you.
Step 1 - Plan the Job
Before you do any work, you should take the time to plan the installation of your sub panel. This is the time to work out where you want the panel to go. Look at local regulations for the requirements, and work out what you need to know. You should also take this time to collect together everything that you need to install the panel.
Step 2 - Get the Place Ready
It is a good idea to remove any covers or doors around the area where your panel will go. Add plywood to the back of the wall, unless there is a mounting board there already. Add the sub panel to the place indicated on your instruction kit, each panel will be slightly different.
Step 3 - Put It All Together
Connect the breaker panel to the main electricity panel, and take the sub feed cables from your main and place them into your new panel, as you require. You can now add new sub cables to your panel via the breaker, as you would attach devices to the original main panel.
