3 Most Effective Places to Use Meal Moth Traps

by DoItYourself Staff

If a moth with a light area near the front of its wings and a darker area near the back appears in your kitchen or garage, you may need some meal moth traps. Meal moths lay their eggs in dry food. The following provides targets for meal moths: cereal, nuts, grains, pet food, birdseed and other things that are stored in pantries, cupboards and garages. The moths drill holes in plastic bags and get into containers that aren't sealed tightly enough. Cardboard offers no barrier to them. Food appears clumped together when moth larvae have gotten into it.

Meal moth traps lure adult male moths inside, then make them stick to glue inside. After you get rid of infested food, place meal moth traps around the area to keep moths from breeding. Try the following three areas.

The Storage Area

Wash out the area to eliminate larvae and cocoons. Put a few meal moth traps in the area to see if adult moths are still there.

Nearby Areas

When the larvae have eaten enough, they travel. They may make cocoons in other storage areas or even other rooms.

Where Crumbs Gather

Also place meal moth traps behind appliances or furniture where fallen crumbs and bits of food may appear.

Remember to put food in tightly sealed containers to prevent another infestation.
