3 Reasons for Choosing Square Recessed Lighting

by DoItYourself Staff

If you haven’t considered square recessed lighting for your next home improvement project, now might be a great time to do so. While circular recessed lighting has quickly become the norm for this type of job, we have suggested 3 key reasons why you should consider square shapes for your next recessed lighting project.

Ease of Installation

When attempting to make the decision between square recessed lighting and circular or some other shape for your lighting trim, it is easy to make the mistake of considering this a purely cosmetic decision. Beyond simple aesthetics, however, there are several technical considerations that make square recessed lighting a more attractive choice for some individuals. To understand the technical benefits of square recessed lighting, it is important to remember that the square part of the recessed light—the trim—plays a dual role. First, and most noticeably, is to provide an attractive frame for the light itself. The second purpose of the trim, however, and the one we are concerned with here, is to cover up the hole in the wall or ceiling drywall in which the light has been installed. Thus, we need to consider the process of installing the light itself when considering whether circular or square trim will be more favorable to a given project.  If you have a circular drywall saw or are confident in your ability to cut fairly precise circles with a jigsaw consistently, then either circular or square trim will be fine. If, however, you are not confident in your ability to produce consistently accurate circles then you may find yourself cutting openings into your wall or ceiling that are more squarish in shape. In this case, square trim will better cover a square hole than a circular trim will.

Aesthetic Beauty

Many individuals feel that the clean, straight lines of walls and ceilings are wonderfully complimented by square recessed lighting. There is something inherently sleek and modern about square trim that is missing in circular recessed lighting. If you have a space that is designed to be structurally, artistically or architecturally modern, square recessed lights are a great way to pair your lighting needs with the needs of the surrounding space.

Unique

While we have listed several considerations that make square recessed lighting fixtures attractive to all types of homeowners, the fact remains that circular recessed lighting has been and still remains by far the most popular choice for homeowners. Most people immediately think of a circular shape when they think of recessed lighting. With this in mind, why not be the first person on your block to break the mold and install square recessed lighting in your home? If you are someone who enjoys being a trendsetter or simply trying something a little different, square recessed lighting is a great way to give you home a unique and aesthetically interesting look.
