3 Sandbox Cover Ideas
There are a number of great ideas that can be used to make a sandbox cover. A sandbox is a wonderfully simple device that can provide hours of safe, innocent fun for children. Sandboxes are inexpensive and can be used at almost any time of the year. However, there will be days when the weather will not permit the use of a sand box and protecting it with a good sandbox cover is essential.
Idea #1 - Purchasing a Cover from an Online or Local Vendor
Often, the easiest thing to do is simply purchase a ready-made item. This can also apply to sandbox covers. Making your own models can be great fun but there are times when people prefer the convenience of simply walking into a store or placing an order online.
One advantage of manufactured sandbox covers is that the quality is usually excellent. Many stores and online vendors supply covers that are lightweight and long-lasting and these can be made from a variety of materials. The main disadvantage of this method is, of course, the cost. Sandbox covers can be extortionately expensive and makes affordability an issue with many families.
Idea #2 - Using Plywood
Plywood can provide a cheap alternative to store-purchased sandbox covers. It will protect the sandbox from rain as well as animal droppings or pests. Plywood is a good alternative due to the fact that it is so abundant. The chances are that stray pieces can be found for free but purchasing a small piece if needed won’t cost much at all.
Plywood is also an environmentally friendly way to cover the sandbox as it is made from a natural substance. Plywood does hold a few disadvantages. The chances of finding a piece of plywood that fit the exact dimensions of the sand box is quite small. It will most likely have to be cut down to size. Plywood will also start to rot and warp due to excessive rain and heat. Water can still seep in through plywood as well especially around the edges and corners.
Idea #3 - Using a Plastic Tarp
Plastic tarps also provide a good option for covering a sandbox. Plastic is light and far easier to work with than plywood. A plastic tarp can be cut to the exact dimensions of the sandbox with little effort and minimal time. Plastic is also waterproof and will keep moisture out if fitted correctly. One can also place an object in the center of the sandbox to promote a propping effect so that excessive water will run off of the tarp.
Plastic tarps are also inexpensive and easy to find. The only real disadvantage to plastic is that it isn’t particularly friendly for the environment. It will most likely outlive the sandbox in terms of usage. If you choose to use plastic, make sure it can be recycled or reused when the sand box has lost its appeal.
Sandboxes can provide hours of fun for children and will last years if they are covered and protected well.
