3 Signs of a Bad PCV Valve

by DoItYourself Staff

A positive crankcase ventilation or PCV valve facilitates the evacuation of gas from the crankcase of an engine. Its proper and efficient operation is essential because a bad PVC valve can affect the performance of your vehicle. Bad valves might demonstrate signs and symptoms that indicate that they need replacement or repair. Look for the following indications of a problem.

Filter Contamination

A faulty valve can cause pressure buildup in the engine’s crankcase, pushing the water vapor through a filter called a breather element. This filter is used to prevent excessive oil. When the water gets mixed with gas, it can leave deposits of oil and hydrocarbons on the air filter, resulting in excessive fuel consumption.

Oil Leakage

A bad valve is usually associated with excessive oil consumption and leakage. The PVC valve relieves pressure when functioning normally, but when it fails, the pressure in the crankcase might increase, pushing the oil out through gaskets and seals.

Decreased Performance

Since the PVC valves play an important role in the vehicle, a faulty valve might affect the overall performance of the car. A bad PVC valve that doesn’t close properly might allow the entrance of oxygen into the combustion chamber, which results in dilution of fuel and air, causing the buildup of pressure in the exhaust. This means that the engine might stall and decrease in performance when the PVC valve is bad.
