3 Steps to Growing Lima Beans Indoors

by DoItYourself Staff

Growing lima beans inside your home is an easy and rewarding pursuit which is simple enough for a child to successfully accomplish. Growing lima beans indoors is a great way to introduce children to gardening because one can learn a lot about plant life from the process. This is why so many elementary and preschools grow lima beans as a school project. Since lima beans are so large, you will be able to clearly observe how a seed sprouts and transforms itself into a viable adult.

Whether you’re an independent gardener or a parent who wishes to enrich their child’s ecological knowledge, growing lima beans is an excellent endeavor. This article will explain how to grow lima beans indoors in three easy steps.

Step One; Germinate Seeds Using Paper Towels:

Acquire several lima beans that are no more than one year old. Completely submerge your lima beans in warm water for at least eight hours but no longer than twenty four. If the seeds have failed to sprout by this time, sandwich them in between several layers of damp paper towels. Keep the seeds in a warm environment until they successfully burst open and produce a small white sprout.

If you’re gardening with a child, this is the perfect opportunity to teach him or her about germination. Teach them how seeds need a warm, moist and dark environment in order to produce a sprout. The first sprout one observes is actually the beginning of the lima beans root system.

Step Two; Sow Seeds in Appropriate Containers:

Prepare one or two six inch containers for sowing seeds by filling the bottom inch with gravel and then loading the remaining space with organic potting soil. You want to use an organic potting soil that is well drained and equipped with time release fertilizer. This way, you will be certain that your lima bean seedlings are receiving enough nutrients while they grow. Before planting, make sure that the soil in each of your pots is moist but not saturated.

Use your finger to make a hole in the soil that is slightly larger than the sprouted lima beans. Place a lima bean in the hole with its sprout pointed down toward the center of the pot. Bear in mind that no more than two lima beans should be planted in one six inch pot. After putting the sprouted lima bean in the pot, fill the remaining space with a light dusting of potting soil. Cover the top of each pot with a layer of plastic wrap to increase humidity and encourage growth.

The pots should be placed in any sunny indoor location where it will receive over six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Step Three; Care for Emerging Seedlings:

Once the seedlings have sprouted above ground, the plastic wrap should be immediately removed to make room for the foliar growth. Keep the pots in an area with high sunlight for the entirety of their growth. Water them only after the top inch of soil has completely dried or if the foliage seems weak or brittle.
