3 Things to Know Before Cutting Down a Bathroom Sink Drain

by DoItYourself Staff

When it comes to cutting down a bathroom sink drain, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind. To make sure that you get the correct size, here are a few things to consider.

1. Determine Type of Drain

Begin by determining the type of drain that you are working with before you do any cutting. Grid and pop up drains are both common and you can tell which one you have easily. A grid drain allows the water to run right down where as a pop up drain can fill up with water.

2. Type of Trap

An S trap will be needed if the drain goes all of the way to the floor. However if it attaches to the wall, then you will need a P trap installed.

3. Length of Pipe

The length of the pipe is one of the most important things that you want to consider. You will need a tape measure as well as an extension pipe to figure out the actual length of the drain. This can be a difficult step because you have to measure different points that twist and turn. Just be sure that you are taking your time with this step to be accurate.
