3 Tips for Buying a Radar Motion Detector

by DoItYourself Staff

A radar motion detector is important if you're concerned about security around your home. This device works by emitting a constant stream of microwave radiation that bounces off objects. The detector compares the original signal to the reflected signal, taking note of changes that would only be caused by something moving.
Here's what to look for when buying a radar motion detector.

Tip Number 1: Purpose

What are you going to use the motion detector for? Do you want to trigger an automatic door or floodlight? Shop for a model that is designed for your purposes. Choose a motion detector that covers a range that is suitable to your needs. For example, some motion detectors can focus on specific small locations, while more expensive models are designed to detect motion through solid objects.
Do you want a battery powered model or something that is hardwired to the electrical system? It all depends on what you want to use the motion detector for. If you have pets, it's important to shop for a radar motion detector that has a sensitivity control. This will stop false alarms caused by your pets running in front of the detector.

Tip Number 2: Budget

What is your budget? The type of model you purchase will depend on how much you're willing to spend. Do some research before making a purchase to find out which devices fulfill your needs, and get a sense of how much each one costs. Indoor radar motion detectors can cost anywhere between $30 and $50 for a basic unit. It usually costs about $10 more if equipped with passive infrared.
Look for deals if affordability is important to you. It's best to search for a motion detector that combines a good price with the features you're looking for.

The technology is becoming more useful and affordable. However, passive infrared technology is overtaking radar motion detectors. As a result, they are sometimes difficult to find on the market. You may be able to find a dual technology motion detector that gives you the features you need.

Tip Number 3: Take Measurements

Motion detectors can be useful for turning on bright outdoor lights and alerting you if someone has arrived on the premises. Before making a purchase, it's also a good idea to measure the dimensions of your house. If you're searching specifically for motion detector lights, look for areas outside your home that could use more light.

Also take note of areas that may be easily burglarized. For example, doors and windows near a wooded area with low light are easier for criminals to enter. Placing light in these areas will add more security to your home.

Shopping around is the best way to get a deal on the type of motion detector you need. Start by looking online, and then visit your local home improvement or hardware store. Once you purchase a motion detector, you and your family can rest easier at night knowing you are safe and secure.
