3 Ways to Tell if Your Water Softener Salt Tank Needs to Be Replaced

by DoItYourself Staff

When it comes to your water softener salt tank, there are a few ways to tell if it needs to be replaced. It is important to maintain the tank properly and make any replacements necessary to ensure that the tank continues to function. Here are a few key things to think about.

1. Layer of Crushed Salt

If you find that there is a layer of crushed salt at the bottom that you can't get rid of, then you may need to replace your water softener salt tank. Typically you will be able to clean it out, however if you do not maintain it correctly, you will find yourself with buildup that cannot be fixed.

2. Iron Problems

Another key way to tell if your water softener tank needs to be replaced is if you see a reddish or orangish color stain. Many times you can buy a cleaner that removes this, however it hints to you that you there is a problem filtering the iron from the water.

3. Hard Water

If you find that the system still produces hard water you may have to replace the softener salt tank. Although, check before replacing to see if the bypass valve is open.
