4 Door Hardware Installation Tips

Door hardware installation is not all that difficult. It is something that can be done with minimal time and effort. There are some tips that make the installation process easier and as hassle free as possible.

  1. Consider the type of door latch that you want. There are passage sets, privacy sets, and dummy sets. Each has their own purpose and their own features. Decide which type would be most beneficial for your particular needs and situation.
  2. Assess the thickness of your door. If you have a door that is thicker than normal, you will need different hardware accessories to make the latch work properly. The same is true with a thin door. The standard hardware will not work properly with a door that is too thick or too thin. You will have to get modification hardware.
  3. Figure out if the doors have holes that are pre-drilled in them. If you purchase hardware that is larger or smaller than the factory holes, you will have to make modifications to the doors. Assess the size of the holes and buy hardware that is appropriate for the holes.
  4. Determine the required backset. This is the measurement from the edge of your door to the center of the hole for the hardware. It is essential to measure this so that you can effectively decide if your hardware is going to work. If the latch does not fit properly, it will not keep the door closed.
