4 LED Track Lighting Wiring Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

There are several reasons to consider LED track lighting. Track lighting helps to shed light on hard to see areas. LED lighting is often preferred over regular types of lighting. LED lights emit a light that is completely focused as opposed to regular lights, which have lights that shine in all directions. You will also not have to worry about fires as LED lights do not emit heat at all. Wiring is something that you will have to understand so that you will be able to properly install your LED track lighting.

Location

The first thing that you will have to think of whenever you are installing your LED track lights is the location. They are most popular in kitchens and other areas that require extra light. You can install them on cables, beams, walls or ceilings. These types of lights are not to be set anywhere permanently. You will find that they can be moved anywhere that you need them to be at any time. This will help make the decision of location much easier. The location will have a lot to do with how you will wire the actual lights.

Wiring Options

If you are not comfortable with disturbing the wires that you already have in your home, then it is a good idea for you to install these to be powered only on one end. You will be able to stay away from the main power with special adapters. These adapters will be able to be supplied anywhere along the track that you need them the most. This is the most recommended way of wiring your LED track lights as it is the easiest and the safest.

If your ceiling has an electrical box already, then you will be able to use the adapters to simply place over it. This will prevent you from having to use the boxes and tap into the main power circuit of your home. If your home does not have an electrical box, then this is something that will need to be installed. This is something that is not recommended for those that do not have experience in electricity.

Hidden Cable

Hidden cables are becoming more popular with track lighting. The cable is extremely hard to see and gives the lights a look as if they are floating. A lot more of the later models of LED track lights have this type of cable. It is a very low voltage cable. It is most popular when used as accent lighting in living rooms. Hidden cables aren't difficult to install. You can purchase kits that will have all the materials and instructions you need to give your track lighting a floating appearance.

Safety

Remember to always use caution whenever you are working with anything that has to do with your electricity. It is important to remember to turn off the breaker box before you begin any work. While LED track lighting can easily be done without having to worry about your main source of power, you should hire a professional if you do not feel comfortable doing the job yourself.
