4 Meal Moth Control Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

Meal moths are a pest that can take over a kitchen or a home. They can sneak into the home in flour or cereals and promptly invade anything plant based. Below are a few tips to keep these annoying insects under control.

Freeze Incoming Food

Food can come infested, no matter how hard packagers try to keep their space insect free. Alternatively, the store you purchased the food at may have an infestation. To keep such an unexpected infestation from transferring to your home, stick grain based items into the freezer as soon as you bring it home and leave it for a night.

Air Tight Seals

If foods are kept in airtight containers of plastic or glass, then any infestation that came with is trapped inside and any outside cannot get in.

Check the Whole House

If meal moths get into your home, they will not limit themselves to the kitchen. If you have anything they might use as food in any other room, get rid of it or seal it up. Nuts in the kitchen, candy stashed in drawers, or decorative pieces made with plants can all become food for meal moths.

Traps and Pesticides

There are pheromone traps and pesticides aimed for meal moths available. These methods will cut down or wipe out an infestation while those above will keep an infestation from coming back.
