4 Organic Shampoo Recipes

by DoItYourself Staff

Organic shampoo is shampoo made only from components that are completely natural, meaning they contain no artificial additives or preservatives. The hair on your head is made out of dead skin cells and excess protein, yet it is important to many of us. Manufactured shampoos, unlike organic shampoo, can actually damage your hair if used too often. You can buy organic shampoo at many stores but they’re expensive. You can make your own organic shampoo at home and some of these recipes follow.

1. Herbal Shampoo

Herbal shampoo is very popular because it adds a wide array of elements back to your hair. For this organic shampoo you will need the following:

  • 2 cups chamomile tea (strong and hot)
  • 3 tablespoons castile soap, grated
  • 1 tablespoon glycerin
  • 5 drops of essential oil (your choice)

Place the castile soap in a clean bowl and pour in the tea. Let the tea steep with the soap for several minutes before whisking in the oil and glycerin. Put the mixture in a plastic bottle and store in a dark place that is also cool. Use as you would any shampoo.

2. Organic Shampoo for Damaged Hair

Damaged hair can be any hair that has been dyed many times, has a lot of split ends or is damaged by the sun. In order to replenish the nutrients in the hair from all this damage you need to use a shampoo that is high in protein. Use the following ingredients and methodology to create this organic shampoo:

  • Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (room temperature and organic)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon castile soap
  • ½ cup of distilled water
  • 5 drops essential oil

Use a blender and combine all of these ingredients inside it. Blend them until they are combined and smooth. Pour the contents inside a clean plastic bottle and use as normal.

3. Organic Shampoo for Oily Hair

Depending on the foods you eat your hair may become oily as your body releases other byproducts. Oily hair is easily fixed with the following organic shampoo:

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons mint
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap, grated
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 drop rosemary essential oil

Place the mint in the hot water and allow it to steep for approximately 20-minutes. Allow the water to simmer for a few moments. Remove the mixture from the stove and strain it then add the grated soap and allow it to soften. Once the mixture has cooled to room temperature you can add the oils. Pour the finished shampoo into a plastic bottle and store in a dark place.

4. Organic Shampoo for Dry Hair

Just like oily hair dry hair is a product of your environment and can be fixed. The following recipe can help with that:

  • ½ cup hot water
  • ¼ cup organic rose petals
  • ¼ cup organic coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoon castile soap, grated
  • 3 drops essential rose oil

Place the rose petal in the hot water for 30-minutes then strain the liquid, discarding the petals. Add the other ingredients and whisk until combined. You can store this organic shampoo in a plastic bottle in a dark place.
