4 Suspended Ceiling Lighting Options
Suspended ceiling lighting is found in several varieties, materials and styles, and in practically any house one will most probably find one or more of these types of lighting fixtures. Basically this type of lighting offers the light component dangling from a chain, which in turn is fixed to the ceiling. We will investigate some possibilities of where such suspended lighting is usually used, and some variations.
Suspended Lighting in a Kitchen and Dining Area
These types of lighting are popular in a kitchen and dining room, especially in open plan layouts, since the light is suspended above the dining table, precisely at its center. Since the table is the focal point of any dining room, the suspended lighting further emphasizes this aspect. In the kitchen area there may be a central island, whereby a suspended ceiling light is also fixed right above it, so as to complement the other ceiling light. They will obviously match one another. If the kitchen is rustic or quite traditional, the lighting should support the style by being quite conventional in style and design. Such lighting fixtures are usually made from bronze, or have wooden components. If on the other hand the kitchen is modern, then the lighting is usually based on a simple design, where stainless steel is most common. If the kitchen cupboards feature a particular color, or if the color scheme of the room is predominant, some may also choose to match the color in the lighting.
Suspended Lighting for a Bathroom
Suspended lights in bathrooms are not very common. Usually shades or spot lights fixed in soffits are more commonly used. However some contemporary bathrooms are offering new suspended lights possibilities, with the intention of matching them with the metallic element featured in some modern bathroom sets. These are usually seen as a series of lights randomly spaced hanging from the ceiling at different lengths, to create a subtle, stylish feeling.
Suspended Lighting in Living Rooms and Sitting Rooms
The main focal point in these rooms is the coffee table in the middle of the room. Thus, the lighting will be placed above it. The style and material of the lighting will depend on the theme of the room. If the sitting room is classic, the lighting will have to be similar to a chandelier, usually featuring several light bulbs in a golden or bronze colored setting. Alternatively if the sitting room is not so formal, the lighting will be less traditional and usually it will be more based on chrome, metallic, silver or even feature the predominant color of the room’s color scheme.
Suspended Lighting in Bedrooms
If the bed is at the center of the main wall of the room, or facing the door, then a suspended light is a good option. The most important thing to remember is never to install a suspending light if the bed is a four-poster bed, since there will be little space between the towering sides of the bed and the light. The light should obviously be adapted according to the style of the bedroom.
It is important to keep in mind whether the particular room has a focal point, because this is the main deciding factor of whether to install a suspended light or not. Other than that, it is imperative to match the lighting style to the room’s theme so as to produce a complimentary effect.
