4 Tips for Using a Degreaser in Your Kitchen

by DoItYourself Staff

If you are keen to clean your kitchen, then you may consider using a degreaser chemical. These are often considered the best way of cleaning up areas of your kitchen that see a lot of food preparation, such as ovens or microwaves. Some people are opposed to the idea of most degreaser products, as they contain a lot of harmful chemicals that can affect the environment. One compromise to this dilemma is to avoid using the degreaser often, but cleaning well when you do so. In order to get the best out of your degreaser, there are a few steps that you can take.

1. Take Precautions

When handling these chemicals, you should always take care to use proper precautions. Never apply the degreaser without using plastic gloves, and you may choose to use a dust mask or other protective gear. Keep the packet out of the reach of children by placing it in a high cupboard or by storing it in a locked area. Never use the degreaser without making sure that animals are out of the way, and before removing any foodstuffs from the area. When you have finished using the degreaser take care to place all of the waste in a plastic bag, including the rubber gloves, and then seal the bag. Dispose of it in the garbage and avoid flushing any of the product into the water system.

2. Soak Removable Items

The night before you use the degreaser remove any detachable parts from your oven and place them into a bowl of soapy water. These parts can include the shelves, the grill, and the hob part of the oven. Don't place any electrical parts in the water, but if any of these are removable, you can give them a good scrub with a damp cloth before replacing them after the oven has been degreased.

3. Use a Smaller Amount

One solution to the use of a degreaser is to use a smaller amount on your oven, but leave it for longer. Most people leave it for about 15 minutes, but if you wish to, you can leave the chemicals for around half an hour. Not only will this reduce the amount of degreaser that you have to place on the oven, but it can also reduce the scrubbing time needed to remove all of the grease.

4. Use on the Floor

If you've ever dropped an egg on the floor you know that ordinary soap won't get rid of the problem. If you don't know how to get rid of a patch of grease on your kitchen floor, using a small amount of degreaser in some water can help you to make the floor clean and shiny. Ensure that you take all of the suitable precautions before using the degreaser, and never pour into the water while your face is close by. Instead, stand back and add the chemical that way. Use a small amount of water, and then dispose of the chemical into the dustbin, rather than pouring away.
