4 Tips for Wiring Outdoor Lighting

by DoItYourself Staff

Outdoor lightning is an effective way to enhance and secure the surrounding  of your house. Properly placed, outdoor lighting deters burglars and imbues your house with a relaxing aura during the nighttime. Below are four tips on wiring outdoor lighting.

1. Local Regulations Check

Check your local regulations for wiring outdoors. Comply with all of the requirements. The wiring regulations are instituted for the main safety of your house as well as your neighborhood. Checking and complying with your local regulations are necessary since fines for any violations on your local regulations are steep, and you may have to end up paying a professional electrician to install your outdoor wiring system.

2. Use Water Proof Materials

When it comes to outdoor wiring, your greatest enemy is water. Use waterproof electric receptacles, boxes, switches, light fixtures and wires.

3. Bury the Wires Deep

Bury the electrical wires at least eighteen inches below the ground or as required by your local legislation. This will avoid accidental wire damage and increases the life-span of your electrical wiring.

4. Use a Conduit and GCFI Outlets

Use PVC electrical conduit for any wires that are above ground. PVC electrical conduits protect your electrical wires from weather-related damage and minimizes accidental electrocution due to exposed wires. Along with the conduit, also use GCFI outlets to further prevent equipment damage and accidents.
