4 Tips to Quiet a Noisy Attic Fan
An attic fan is meant to reduce the heat level in the attic by sucking out hot air from the attic. Most attic fans are controlled by thermostats, which switch them on or off according to temperature requirements. To increase the overall efficiency of thermostats, attic fans should be installed along with additional vents to draw in fresh air from outside. These fans are most useful during summers when the external temperature crosses the 120°F mark.
Occasionally, due to various reasons, these fans start making annoying noises, which worsen at night. If the attic fans generate too much noise, try the below methods to make them run smoothly:
- If the fan makes a constant metal clanking noise, in all probability, the fan blades are imbalanced. In such cases, either get the blades changed or ask an electrician to balance them out.
- Attic fans also start making constant noise when their bearings wear out. Replacing the bearings is the only option.
- Occasionally, screws used to fix the fan to the gables or roofs become loose. This causes the entire assembly to vibrate and make noise. This problem can be solved by tightening the screws.
- If you have been using the same fan for at least a couple of years, their life is probably almost over and require replacement. A rusted motor is difficult to repair and easier to replace. Just order a new set of motors and enjoy disturbance-free nights.
