4 Types of Structured Wiring Panels

by DoItYourself Staff

Structured wiring panels are a component of a structured wiring design for a house. Structured wiring is becoming much more popular among today's builders. Many builders are combining structured wiring with other green building features to the homes. As you add this type of wiring, you increase the efficiency and effectiveness of home electronic communication. Homes today are becoming powered with network-ready appliances, computers, home theater system, whole house audio and many additional components that make it necessary to thoughtfully layout and plan the wiring throughout the home. Below you will find different types of structured wiring panels available on the market today.

1 - Telephone and Video Panels

Purchase a structured wiring panel that handles both telephone and video cabling. Many of these types of panels include a telephone board and a video splitter. Both of these pieces are added to a plastic bracket so that the distribution of both telephone and cable is smooth, effective and efficient. An average designed panel will handle around four telephone lines and five video feeds or connections. This type of panel can be added to an already developed structured wiring system or it can be used as a standalone panel.

2 - Home Networking Panels

For a broader type of home networking solution, consider adding a home networking panel to your structured wiring design for your home. This type of panel includes data boards, video splitters and telephone boards. It is used to network your home and distribute essential telephone services throughout the building. This type of panel can usually handle six telephone connections, five or six video connections and it can sometimes provide remote telephone capabilities to various other locations.

3 - Intercom Systems

An intercom system is another great component to add to your home. An intercom structured wiring panel will give you the ability to communicate from room to room. They are usually designed to work with CAT5 wiring and they will transmit voice signals not only throughout the residence but it can also transmit information and voices to pre-designated outside locations.

Imagine being able to see who is at the door before you answer it! Some of the intercom systems and paneling come with the ability to utilize video, data and voice feeds all at the same time.

4 - Expansion Panels

If you have designed and installed your structured wiring panels but you have found that you still have additional needs, you do not need to worry and think that you will need to redo the entire paneling system. There are many different types of expansion panels available on the market that give you the flexibility to expand one, two more services at a time. You can therefore, expand your home networking solution without needing to tackle a re-wire and new panel for the home audio or home intercom systems that have already been designed and installed in the home.
