4 Ways to Liven Up a Flower Arrangement

by DoItYourself Staff

Throughout the world homes and businesses depend on flower arrangements for decorations. Flowers can brighten up any corner. An arrangement can reflect your mood or show off a holiday spirit.

Spring Arrangements: Spring is a time of rebirth and new beginnings.

Let the flowers show this by the use of soft pastel colors. Lighten up a corner with soft greens, shades of pink, and lavender. Brighten the bouquet with bright yellow. This is the time of the year to use pink roses, zinnias and tulips. The branches of the cherry blossom tree will lighten up any arrangement. Lily of the valleys and orchids will add a bright spot of color. Stick in some plastic Easter eggs or add some ribbon to the flowers. Ribbon on wire is easy to handle and shape.

Summer Arrangements: Summer flowers will be much brighter than any other time of the year.

The use of baby's breath and gladiolus will brighten any flower arrangement. This is the time to pick carnations, heather and freesia to brighten up an old arrangement. Add some red or white glitter to the tips of a green branch. It will reflect the stronger sunlight into the room. Add branches of white and some of the red, white and blue sparklers that are available for the July fourth celebrations. Flowing greenery will also make the flower arrangement look fresh as if the plant has just grown. Match up a new ribbon to tie around the planter or vase.

Fall Arrangements: The colors of fall reflect the changing of the leaves.

This is a good time to use shades of orange and rusts. Remember that bright yellow will add the right touch of color to brighten the flower arrangement. Add some china berry or pepper berry to the arrangement. Make the berry sparkle by dipping them into glitter. Place the arrangement in front of a window or mirror so the glitter shines brightly. Sunflowers and mums bring a bright touch of color to an arrangement that might seem dark. Slip some beads on the tips of the leaves to add some more color to the flower arrangement. Use a pumpkin as a vase and add some gourds to the arrangement. This will not only brighten the flowers but add a touch of fun.

Winter Arrangements: The flowers of winter should be bright and cheerful.

Bright reds, rich greens and white will brighten any arrangement. Amaryllis, pansy and gerbera daisy will bring new life to a dark arrangement. Add some holly berry and cattail. This is the perfect time to use glitter of gold and silver. Tall candles will also add some holiday spirit. This is a good time to add some sparkly ornaments or some made of mirrors. These will help reflect the weaker winter sun and brighten up the flower arrangement. Place the flowers in front of a window or light to help catch this weaker sunlight. A mirror behind the arrangement will also help lighten them.

Flower arrangements should try to use the colors of the season to keep them fresh and looking new. Remember to keep everything in proportion and then use your own imagination to create a light, bright and fun flower arrangement.
