4 Ways to Prevent a Grain Beetle Infestation
A grain beetle is a tiny saw-toothed beetle that is related to merchant grain beetles. These beetles are found mainly in dried food that have been stored for awhile, like cereals, biscuit mixes, flour and rice. There are several simple ways of preventing a grain beetle infestation with the use of simple household items. Here is how:
1. Clear out Old Food
Food that has been stored for long periods at a time is most susceptible to the grain beetle. Make sure you empty out the containers from the old stuff before replenishing with new food; else the beetle will attack the fresh food as well.
2. Clean Your Larder Thoroughly
If you feel there are grain beetles in your food, you start by basic cleaning methods. Clear out all the food and give the larder a thorough scrub. Separate food that needs to be thrown away from food that needs some treatment and can be reused. Vacuum the kitchen well then wash the whole area with carbolic soap and water, finally spraying with a mild insecticide.
3. Freeze It
Food can be stored in the freezer at 0 degrees for up to 6 days to kill all stages of the grain beetle from larvae to adult.
4. High Temperatures
Foods can also be put in the oven to kill all stages of the beetle. Place food in glass containers that can take the oven heat and put into the oven at 135 degrees F for an hour ensuring that the grain beetle is killed and food is clear from this menace.
