It's no secret that many let garage organization fall by the wayside, cramming the space with tools, junk, and whatever else just won't fit in the basement or attic. While guests and visitors may not see this unsightly chaos, it is wasted space. Try some of these tips to reclaim your garage and convert it back to a place where you can actually fit your car.
Plastic Bins
Start by purchasing at least 10 to 15 large plastic tote boxes with lids from any home improvement store or even local drug store. Next, get to work sorting out what's piled up. The bins can be stacked, and since they're plastic, you will still be able to see what is inside each. Many come with convenient labels.
Get Rid of Extra Stuff
Don't be afraid to donate, sell or throw away anything that you haven’t used in the past year and honestly can’t see using any time soon. The standard rule is that if you haven't used or worn an item in at least one year, you don't need it.
Many companies, like Goodwill and the Salvation Army, offer pick-up service of heavier items like furniture and outdated computer equipment. There are also companies such as "Got Junk?" who will also pick up and toss out items for you.
Install Shelves
Get items off of the garage floor is by installing shelves. Inexpensive shelving that attaches to the garage wall is easy to find. You can organize small items on the shelves by placing them into plastic or cardboard shoe boxes and labeling each.
Hang It Up
Heavy outdoor items can be hung on the wall with special clasps and hooks that are made for just this purpose. Find these at your local hardware store and use them for rakes, brooms, shovels and even lawnmowers.
Hose It Down
Sweep the garage thoroughly and then spray all dirt out the door. Also, clear out the cobwebs and lay down some plastic or vinyl mats by the entrance to the door to keep future dirt at bay. Be sure to wash your car before you park it in your new spotless garage.
