5 Hidden Entertainment Center Design Ideas

by DoItYourself Staff

Though an entertainment center can be a great focal point of a room or home, it can also take up a significant amount of space. By making use of hidden entertainment equipment, you can have the entertainment system you desire without forgoing any room.

Wall Recess

Building a wall recess to house equipment is a great way to create a hidden entertainment center. By setting the items into the wall and fitting them on runners, you can create a situation where they can be slid out when they are required before sliding back into place when you are finished. This method can be used whether you want the design to be operated manually or, by installing a linear actuator, operated electronically so that your system appears and disappears at the touch of a button.

Cabinet

Consider building a stand-alone cabinet to hide your entertainment system when it is not in use. There is some variety available when it comes to this option as the cabinet can be created to open from the front or the top.

Further, to add a further accent to your home, the cabinet can be designed to look like a regular item of furniture. For example, an item which looks like a standard cupboard or sideboard can actually be home to an entertainment center. This option will also allow you to ensure that the furniture fits well with the existing décor by choosing the shape, color and finish that works best. Electronics can be used to ensure that you only need touch a button to make the equipment smoothly slide into view.

Projector Screen

By using a projector screen which drops into place when it is necessary, you can also build a projector and speakers into the wall so that the system disappears when it is not required. Projector screens are available on the market which can be operated by remote control to make them easier to use.

Seclusion

By installing all your entertainment equipment in one area, for example, along a single wall, this can then be hidden with the use of a curtain or privacy screen. Building recessed static shelves will reduce the amount of space the it being used and this will provide versatility in the event that you want to make a change or move equipment to different locations.

This method can also be used by limited your entertainment equipment to a single room. Consider converting the attic or the basement into a home theater area where all entertainment needs are met in one place so that the rest of the house is not disturbed.

Misted Glass

Making use of misted glass to hide your entertainment center is an option with the technological advances that have been made with glass. Glass is available on the market which looks like any other but becomes misted at the touch of a button. This can be used with an entertainment center that is recessed into a wall or housed within a specially constructed cabinet; the glass will be clear when the system is in use and can be made opaque in order to hide the equipment.
