5 Home Fire Sprinkler Systems to Know

by DoItYourself Staff

When trying to prevent fire in your house, you should definitely consider home fire sprinkler systems. Fire sprinklers are more convenient than just having the regular fire extinguisher. For one you don’t have to be home to protect your house from fire. The system is equipped with a detecting device that will automatically turn itself on when it detects a change in the temperature. Aside from that, fire sprinkler systems do not require specialized knowledge for you to operate them. You can read below about five specific types of home fire sprinkler systems.

Wet Pipe System

The wet pipe system is the most popular kind of sprinkler system in the market. The reason for the preference is the system's ease of operation. This fire sprinkler connects to pipes that carry pressurized water. Once the fire sprinkler detects an increase in temperature, it will activate automatically. Most sprinklers are equipped with an automatic alarm check valve that will indicate the presence of a fire. But the pipes have the same downsides as any other water pipes, especially during winter.

Dry Pipe System

The dry pipe system is a runner-up in popularity. It is more commonly used in houses that do not have heating or in places with frigid winters. Because the dry pipe system does not carry any water, it’s not vulnerable to freezing during the colder months of the year. Instead of carrying water, the dry pipe system uses pressurized air. Although you no longer have to worry about insulating your pipes, the dry pipe system requires more space. It is more expensive and less reliable.

Deluge System

The deluge system is what you see in movie scenes that feature sprinklers. The deluge system is different because once one sprinkler activates, all the others automatically activate as well. This system uses a deluge valve. The deluge valve works by allowing water to flow through all of the pipes of the system so that all the sprinklers are supplied with water.

Pre-Action System

The pre-action system combines all the advantages of the wet pipe, dry pipe and deluge pipe systems. However, you need to shell out serious cash to fit your home with a pre-action fire sprinkler system. There are two kinds of pre-action system models: the single interlock and double interlock. The single interlock works like the dry pipe system, but the double interlock works like the deluge valve system.

Foam-Water System

The foam-water sprinkler system is similar to the wet pipe system, but it releases a combination of water and foam rather than just water. This type is not so popular among home fire sprinkler systems.
