5 Reasons to Upgrade Your Mountain Bike Lights

by DoItYourself Staff

Safety dictates that it is important to always have effective mountain bike lights attached to your bicycle, no matter where it is being used. By maintaining every aspect of the bike’s potential uses, a cyclist can always ensure that safety is paramount.

Brightness

In the event that the bulb within the bike light fails to produce sufficient light, it would be prudent to upgrade to a more powerful variety. If the bulb is such that it only produces a narrow beam of light and has dark voids, it should be upgraded to a brand that provides an even amount of light.

Some manufacturers produce lights that can be used with a bulb that is of a higher voltage than the light suggests. This will create a light that is brighter than it would be with a bulb of corresponding voltage. However, bulbs of a higher voltage within a standardized fitting will probably need replacing more often.

Change of Use

A mountain bike light that has been used on an urban street may not be as useful on a dark country lane. This is due to the fact that many street lamps make the need for a very strong front lamp less essential. If you plan on cycling in areas where there is a lack of street lighting, it is important to counter this with powerful front and back lights to ensure that you can see and be seen.

If you are changing the main use of your mountain bike, choose a light to best meet the new purpose. For example, riding a mountain bike in a densely wooded area would warrant the need for a light that is not only bright, but that also has a wide beam to help the cyclist see as much as possible.

Power

As technology moves forward, you are likely to find that a battery comes on the market that has a longer life than the variety that you presently use. Upgrading to a mountain bike light that makes use of a battery with a longer life is beneficial where long journeys are planned. Lights that make use of rechargeable batteries can also be beneficial for cyclists who are planning long journeys or adventure rides as there is no need to worry about carrying additional batteries.

Light Generator

Where an existing mountain bike light comprises a generator, upgrading to a modern version is a good idea to ensure that any new technology is incorporated. Modern bike light generators include a reflector to give other road users more of a chance to notice the cyclist as well as a capacitor to retain a charge-similar to a battery-in order to provide power to the light even when the bike is stationary.

Regulations

It is essential for a cyclist to keep up to date with legal requirements to ensure that the mountain bike lights meet this standard. Different countries have different regulations so it is worth upgrading in the instance of riding in a different country to ensure that you do not fall foul of the law.
