5 Steps to Install Flourescent Recessed Lights
what you'll need
- Fluorescent recessed fixture and kit
- Jigsaw or drywall saw
- Screwdriver
- Twist-on wire connectors
- Wire stripper
Fluorescent recessed lights are an aesthetically appealing alternative to standard fluorescent ballast systems. Recessed lights offer controlled lighting solutions, while fluorescent bulbs help to keep down the cost of electricity and maintain the energy efficiency of your home or office. This is a moderately difficult DIY project that involves some electrical wiring. If wiring does not already exist from a previous light fixture, or if you wish to install multiple lights where there are not additional fixtures, new wires will need to be run to the junction box on each fixture. If you have no past electrical experience, it may be best to use an electrician for this part of the job.
Step 1 – Prepare Bar Hangers
Most fluorescent light systems use bar hangers to align the recessed light with the ceiling. Slip the hangers into the brackets on the fixture's pan, and adjust the height in such a way that the bottom of the pan will be level with the bottom of the ceiling after mounting. The brackets are adjustable, and it's usually possible to get a near perfect line with the ceiling. Once it's adjusted, lock the height using the provided screws.
Step 2 – Cut the Hole
Using the size of your lighting fixture as a guideline, trace the shape of the fixture onto the ceiling. Use the stud finder to locate ceiling joists. Most recessed lights are light enough to be self-supporting, but it's best to refer to both the manufacturer's instructions and local building code when determining whether or not to place the light next to the joist, so that the junction box can be secured to it. Use the jigsaw or drywall saw to cut the opening for the fixture.
Step 3 – Place the Pan and Wire
Turn off your power at the junction box. Splice the wires on the fixture to the wires run to it, and secure with wire connectors. Push the connected wires into the junction box, and close the lid. Push the rest of the pan assembly in the hole, securing the fixture to the support.
Step 4 – Align the Pan
The four screws tightened to generally align the pan earlier may require further adjustment. Check their alignment now, and loosen and readjust them as necessary to create a flush line between the bottom of the pan and the visible edge of the ceiling.
Step 5 – Apply Trim
Apply any included trim. Most trim snaps or twists on. Apply gentle pressure, but do not force the trim or use a hammer. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the trim if it requires additional hardware, as this can vary significantly from model to model. Once the trim is snug, install your fluorescent bulbs and any included cover. Restore power to the area, and turn on the light. Repeat with any other lights that you wish to install, and the project is complete!
