When preparing to replace or repair the interior door handle in your car, truck or boat, always have your owner's manual on hand for reference as you follow these general guidelines.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Flathead screwdriver
- Thin Chisel or Pry Bar
- Standard/Metric Socket Set
- Digital Camera or Paper and Pen
- Magnetic Tool Tray
Step 1 – Removing Door Panel
Depending on the make, model and year of your vehicle you will need to remove the door skin/panel from the door frame. For most new cars this will be a necessary step.
Using your thin chisel or pry bar, carefully disengage the panel from the frame, moving from spot to spot until the locking mechanisms pop out. Pull the panel away from the frame, taking care not to yank any electronics loose.
Step 2 – Document Assembly with Camera or Paper and Pen
This step is vital if you want to remember how to put it all back together again when you are done. Photograph, write down or draw each step so you know where each piece belongs as you reassemble.
Step 3 – Unhook Electronics if Necessary
For new cars you will have to unhook windows and door locks.
Step 4 – Make Repairs or Replacements
This step is where you will determine if it is necessary to replace the whole unit or if you can simply make repairs. Refer to your owner’s manual for correct parts. Sometimes this is as simple as tightening screws or reattaching a piece.
Step 5 – Reassemble Interior Door Panel
Referring to your photos, notes or drawings, reassemble the door panel in reverse order.
While repairing an interior door handle is often an easy fix, allow ample time for removing and reassembling the door panel.
