5 Tips for Installing a Corner Shower Door

by DoItYourself Staff

A corner shower door completes the installation of a corner shower. Although a corner shower looks wonderful and gives more room in the bathroom, it requires more care of installation. Inevitably, the way to install a corner shower door will vary from make to make of shower. This assumes a corner shower door that opens outward rather than slidng. Other types of door will require other techniques.

Tip 1 - Types Of Doors

There are several types of corner shower door. Some slide, even on corner showers that are square-those that are curved will almost always slide. Others will open outward, much like a regular door. There are pros and cons to both types. Some people prefer sliders for small bathrooms because they don't require clearance to open, but an outward opening door can give easier access to the shower.

Tip 2 - Door

Installing the corner shower door will be virtually the final step in installing a corner shower door. Unpack and inspect it for any damage. Check the frame to be certain it’s straight.

Tip 3 - Measurements

With your tape measure, check the measurements of the door opening on the corner shower enclosure. Compare this to the measurement of the corner shower door. Also use a level on the uprights and bottom for the corner shower door to be certain it’s straight. If not, then the corner shower door won’t fit properly.

Tip 4 - Dry Fit

The corner shower door won’t fit on side hinges. Instead it will use points on the top and bottom to fit into the top and bottom of the door frame. It’s important to dry fit the door first to make sure it can open and close smoothly and remain closed. This will be easier with two people, but one person can manage it. Carefully put the door on the bottom rail of the corner shower, with the lower point going into the proper hole in the rail.

With one person holding the door properly upright, the other person should install the upper door rail, fitting it in place on the other rails with the upper door point through the hole on the upper rail. Check that the door will open and close easily.

Tip 5 - Securing

If there are no problems with the dry fitting, you can go ahead and screw the upper rail in place. There should be two screws on each side of the rail to secure it. Tighten these but don’t overtighten them. You’ll now need to install the small magnet in the door frame that will stop the corner shower door swinging open. This will be on the upright. Screw it in place and check that it will hold the corner shower door closed, yet release it under easy pressure.

To finish the corner shower door, add the appropriate handles or knobs to the interior and exterior of the door. These will screw into place. Complete the job by using glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the glass of the corner shower door and leave it shining and ready for use.
