5 Tips for Trailer Hitch Wiring

If you have a new car or truck and want to do some trailer hitch wiring, you may have a rather easy job on your hands, but if it's older it may be a little more complicated. Patience is required because the job can be tedious. However, the average do-it-yourselfer should have no problem wiring a trailer hitch, as long as they leave themselves enough time.

1. Check for Existing Wiring

Many of the newer vehicles on the road have been pre-wired for a trailer hitch. If your vehicle is new, you should check to see if it has been pre-wired. If so, all you will have to do is connect the male and female ends of the vehicle and trailer. You should be able to get this information from the book that came with your vehicle. If you can’t find the book, look in the rear of the vehicle near the trailer hitch.

2. Ground the Vehicle

You should run a wire from the frame of the vehicle to the trailer. This will ground the vehicle. You must make sure that the wire is running from the vehicle’s frame, not the bumper. You will need to use a connector with four contacts.

3. Use an Adapter

Depending on the type of trailer you are attempting to wire, the connectors between the trailer and the vehicle may not match. You could go through a long process trying to fix this, or your could simply buy an adapter from your local auto parts store. You will find a variety of adapters.
