5 Tips for Using Wire Nuts Properly
If you are trying working with electrical wires, you will probably need to use wire nuts to keep them under control. The following tips should make your wire connectors easy to use.
1. Set Up Correctly
In order to use wire nuts sucessfully, you will need wire strippers. Make sure you have a set before you begin. Use them to strip a small amount of the protective sheath from the wires. Try to keep the amount you remove under 3/8 inch, but the exact amount is not important.
2. Making the Connection
Begin by putting the wires into the wire nut. Twist the connector until you cannot do so further.
3. Testing the Connection
It is easy to leave a wire nut insecurely placed, resulting in a bad connection that may fall apart later. After making your connection, pull firmly on your wire nut a few times to make sure it is connected properly. If it shows signs of being loose or falling apart, re-connect it.
4. Using Correct Wires
You should not use wire nuts with aluminum wire.
5. Using the Correct Wire Nut
Wire nuts are color coded and labeled by size. This code corresponds to the size of the wires they are meant to be used with. Be sure you are using the correctly sized wire nut for your project.
