5 Tips on Buying Natural Gas Logs

by DoItYourself Staff

Natural gas logs are very popular, but there are a number of things to consider when choosing logs. There are specific logs that are suited for many different purposes. One of the first important decisions you must make will be to consider whether you will purchase a vented, or unvented, natural gas log fireplace.

Vented or Unvented

A vented fireplace requires the use of a flue or chimney. The idea of these vents is to get rid of fumes and also provide air to the fire. This makes a gas log vented fire have a more realistic looking wood burning flame. The only problem with vented fireplaces is that they lose heat through the chimney.

However unvented systems are much easier to install and while they don't have quite as a realistic flame compared to a real wood fireplace they are cheaper to run. There is no vent, and this means that no heat will be lost to the chimney.

An unvented gas fireplace is much more efficient than a vented gas log, they are capable of burning almost all of the natural gas. They also produce less carbon monoxide. You might not be allowed to fit an unvented gas log in all areas so check with your local building standards to check.

A vented fireplace has a yellow flame which looks much more like the flame when you burn wood. This does however contain soot which will make it necessary to sweep your chimney from time to time.

Choosing a Vented Gas Log

Vented gas logs are very popular because the flame looks much more like a wood burning stove than other types of fire. The flame has more of a yellow color. It is important that you have a chimney or space to vent your gas log fire. Check that your current chimney is drawing properly because if there are any problems with the draw of your chimney then it will affect the warmth and success of the fire.

Propane or Natural Gas

If your home is connected to mains natural gas then it will be possible to buy a natural gas gas log. If not then you could always choose a propane gas fire. These propane fires can be connected to gas bottles which makes them suitable for everyone. Natural gas is cheaper, and if it's available in your local area is more convenient.

Natural gas is also seen as being safer than propane because it is lighter than air. This means that natural gas will rise, but propane is heavier and so will pool which could be much more dangerous, if there is a leak.

Hiring a Professional

Whenever you are dealing with gas fires you must hire a professional for assistance. Professional plumbers will be able to ensure that all of the gas lines are installed correctly and will also reduce the chances of leaks.

Checking for Leaks

Plumbing is difficult , however plumbing with gas is much more complicated. Plumbing gas can be challenging because it's able to get through much smaller gaps. To check for leaks you can spread soapy water on the joints of the pipe. If any of the soapy water bubbles up then you will know that you have a leak which needs your attention.
