5 Winter Car Storage Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

If you have decided not to use your car this winter, you should prepare your vehicle and get some winter car storage tips. Stored inappropriately, the car could be damaged, and you may have a hard time when spring comes.

1. Clean the Inside of the Car

If you store your car for the winter, you need to make sure it is clean both on the inside and out. Remove all dirt, debris or food residue, so that insects or other animals will not target your car during the cold season. You may also apply some pest repellant.

2. Wash the Car

Wash the exterior of your car and have it waxed, so that the vehicle won’t be prone to rusting, and you’ll have a clean car when the spring comes.

3. Cover the Vehicle

Regardless of the storing area you use for your vehicle, you should drape your car in a waterproof cover. This will protect the paint.

4. Disconnect the Battery

To preserve the quality of your battery, you should disconnect it. Even when in storage, the car may extract some electricity from the battery, and you’ll have a difficult time starting your car in the spring.

5. Put the Tires on Jack Stands

When stored for over 1 month, it’s better if the tires don’t touch the ground. Get some jack stands, which will prevent the development of flat spots on the tires.
