6 Best Precautions to take for Home Child Safety

by DoItYourself Staff

Home child safety should be paramount in all households. There are many items and objects lying around the house which could create a risk to a child. Therefore, it is important to take all of the correct precautions to make sure that your child can roam freely so you won't have to worry about possible injuries. Here are a few of the best precaution tips.

1. Remove Loose Items

Many homes will have a number of potentially dangerous items laying around the house. Matches and lighters are good examples of this and these items need to be removed to stop a curious child from playing with them. Go around each room of the home and remove the most obvious hazards that you come across. Make sure any sharp objects such as kitchen knives or utility blades are either kept in locked cupboards or in areas that are out of the direct reach of a child.

2. Windows

If the windows in your home have low-lying pull chords, change these for window opening restrictors. Low-hanging chords can create a hazard to your child because they can easily reach them and pull on them. Some children are also very adept at putting the chord ends in their mouths and swallowing the plastic retainers.

Opening restrictors will cost a little more, but it is a small price to pay for your child's safety. However, the simplest solution is to tie a knot in the hanging chord so you half the length that it hangs at.

3. Glass

Make sure that all areas of glass in low positions have been fitted with safety glass. Safety glass is stronger and will shatter into smaller pieces if it breaks. This will reduce the risk of large glass shards causing a bad cut on a child. Safety glass is also more difficult to break if a young child gets excited and bangs toys and objects against it.

4. Electrical Appliances

Make sure that all electrical appliances are fitted with child plug covers. Remove any small, metallic objects that may be close to a plug socket or electrical fitting. These will stop a child from sticking their fingers or a metallic object into a plug socket. Also, remove any long wires or chords laying around from electrical fittings because a child can easily trip over these.

5. Fire and Heater Guards

Fire and heater guards are standard in any topic relating to home child safety. These guards can be fixed around the front of a fire or over a heater. This will stop a child from reaching out to touch the fire or heater and burning themselves badly. Be sure to buy a fire or heater guard with rounded edges because a child may still try and push down the guard which could cause cuts if it has sharp edges.

6. Latches

Fit child safety latches onto any storage areas that a child may be able open. These latches form plastic hoops which will hold firmly but can be easily opened by an adult. These latches will stop a child from opening cupboards or drawers that may contain dangerous implements or heavy objects. Safety latches can be bought in large quantities and will cost very little.
