6 Ceiling Fixture Flush Mount Steps

by DoItYourself Staff

There are several ways to install a ceiling fixture including both flush mounted and recessed mount, but a ceiling fixture flush mount is probably one of the easiest.

Types of Flush Mounted Ceiling Fixtures

There are several different kinds of flush mount ceiling fixtures. These include single light fixtures and track lighting. Single light ceiling fixtures are often used to either directly focus light on specific task areas – like over a sink – or they can be used to brighten an entire room.

Track lighting usually consists of several lights that are installed in banks of lights. Track lights can be simple straight tracks that have adjustable light mounts. Usually this type of track light can not only be adjusted along the track, but also adjusted to direct light in a specific place in the room. Track lighting is often used to direct light at specific task areas in a room, like reading areas, conversation pits and above a kitchen sink or food prep area in a kitchen.

Another type of track light includes a curved track. Very often this kind of contemporary track light has dropped single lights with decorative light shades. These lights can be adjusted along the track to place light in specific places.

Flush Mount Installation Process

Tools and Materials Needed:

•Ceiling Fixture
•Threaded Nipple
•Mounting Strap
•Wire Stripper
•Voltage Tester
•Electrical Box
•Insulated Screwdriver

Step 1 – Turn Power Off

Since you will be installing an electrical fixture, you will need to turn off the power at the fuse box or panel. The fuse box is usually located in a closet, the garage or outside of the house. Locate the fuse switch that controls the power in the area of the home where you are installing the fixture. Use the voltage tester on the wire or switch where you are installing the fixture, making sure the power has been turned off completely from that circuit.

Step 2 – Set Wire in Electrical Box

Bring the wiring cable into the electrical box of the fixture. Strip approximately ½ to ¾ inches of insulation covering off of the wire cable with the wire strippers.

Step 3 – Attach the Mounting Strap

Install the mounting strap to fixture electrical box by connecting it at the top and bottom of the box. Now, screw the threaded nipple through the mounting strap and attach it firmly.

Step 4 – Connect Wiring to Box

Splice the wires from the fixture into the fixture electrical box. Connect and match wires according to color – black to black, white to white, etc. Draw a pigtail with the green grounding wire to the mounting strap so that the fixture is completely grounded electrically.

Step 5 – Secure Wires

Wrap the wire connections with black electrical tape to safely secure them. Place the wires into the ceiling fixture electrical box, neatly tucking them into the box.

Step 6 – Attach Cover and Turn Power Back On

Place the fixture cover over the nipple. Turn the power back on at the fuse box. Turn the light fixture on to make sure it is working correctly.
