6 Fiberglass Shower Floor Maintenance Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

A fiberglass shower floor can be maintained to ensure it does not become dull, even after years of use. However, this does require some elbow grease on your part.

1. Provide Enough Ventilation in the Shower Room

If the shower is always wet, molds, algae, water stains, and humidity can become a problem. Open the windows after every shower. Install an exhaust fan as well to reinforce the ventilation, especially if the room is located in an area with not much natural ventilation.

2. Purchase a Floor Mop

A floor mop can be used to help dry the floor every after use. Make sure that it gets cleaned and dried as well so that molds do not get attracted to it easily. A floor mop can also be used to easily clean the floor if it gets muddy or dirty.

3. Use Liquid Soap

Bar soap is the number one cause of soap scum. To avoid the problem, use liquid soap as an alternative as much as possible. Unlike bar soap, liquid soap does not contain a lot of residue that later on turns into scum.

4. Clean Regularly

After taking a shower, take time to flush soap lather down the drain. Remove hair and other residue on the floor as well. Any left-over debris can cause the moisture to stay on the floor for an extended period of time. Therefore, remove any debris as soon as you notice them. Plan a weekly or bi-weekly cleaning routine. There are times when the floor can get really dirty, and therefore, require more elbow grease.

During weekly or bi-weekly cleaning schedules, use a mild detergent and a sponge to remove stuck dirt and grime on the floor. If there are mold growths, use a stronger cleaner – household or oxygen bleach. For safety purposes, use oxygen bleach as it is more environmental-friendly. Dilute the bleach in a container and pour it onto the floor surface. Wait for 10 minutes before scrubbing or brushing the floor. Rinse well with water after.

5. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

If the floor develops a smell or becomes dull, a baking soda and vinegar combination can make it really clean and fresh. Dilute one part of vinegar and one part of water in a container. Use a sponge to apply the solution onto the surface. Wait for 10 minutes. Afterwards, pour in some baking soda. The two will create a reaction, but that is normal. Wipe the combination on the floor surface with a sponge. Wait for another ten to twenty minutes. Rinse the residue with water. Wipe the floor dry with a cloth or a floor mop.

6. Polish It

Polishing can give the floor a glossy look. Use a commercial fiberglass polish or car wax. Rub the polishing material in a circular motion until it becomes glossy. Do not walk on the floor yet. Wait for the wax or polish to dry before using the shower.
