6 Rustic Outdoor Lighting Options

by DoItYourself Staff

When it comes to enhancing your outdoor space, rustic outdoor lighting is a practical and stylish choice. The mix of wrought metals and glass brings an old fashioned charm and ambiance into the garden but still provides the modern energy efficiency that homeowners look for in new electrical products. There is a wide range of different styles and designs to choose from. Rustic lighting also comes with a variety of power options. Choose electric for the guarantee of light at the flick of a switch, gas if the flickering effect appeals the most, solar powered for the energy conscious and the traditional candle option for the most authentic result.

1. Solar Powered Path Lights

Go eco-friendly with a solar powered design. Very often, this energy efficient light is modeled as a standard street lamp and when placed next to a garden path, its design works very well by lighting your walkways at ground level. Powered up during the day by natural light even when there is little or no bright sunlight, it then emits a soft glow after dark. Place several throughout your garden and driveway to light your way in a stylish yet cost-efficient fashion.

2. Street Lamp

This design is modeled on a standard street lamp. The metal post gives the lamp height and using several of them can be a good choice for a long driveway. Choose a low wattage design for a soft light rather than the glare you get from a from a standard lamppost and they’ll give your home curb appeal without making your driveway look like a highway.

3. Wall Sconces

This type of design is typically old fashioned but the wrought iron look compliments a rustic garden, particularly where there is metal garden furniture. Use more than one on the exterior wall of your house facing the garden and the matching pairs will create an elegant appeal. One either side of a main door or entrance to the property also has a useful function as well as the obvious aesthetic attraction.

4. Rustic Designed Chandeliers

For overhead trellises and canopies, the elegance of a rustic chandelier brings the indoors to the outside by helping to create an extension of the main house. The canopy area becomes another room and can be completed with a garden dining set or lounging area. These chandeliers are usually ornate with and can be created with one or several lights for a subtle or dramatic effect.

5. Themed Lighting

Rustic outdoor lighting has the added advantage of being particularly ornate. Create a theme in the garden by choosing lighting with a particular design in the metalwork. Choose from such designs as deer, wild cats and woodland plants to blend perfectly with the outdoor environment.

6. Rustic Christmas Lights

When the season arrives, choose a string of rustic outdoor lights to decorate your home with a little antiquated charm. Strings of tiny lanterns will combine with the festive theme and if you have a log cabin or summer house, hang them from the eaves for an instant Santa’s Grotto.
