6 Tips for Aligning Your Projector Screen

by DoItYourself Staff

Other than the projector itself the projector screen is the most important part of your theater room. Everything else that you add to the home theater can be placed anywhere you like but if the projector screen is not lined up properly you will get a picture that is of poor quality. Here are several tips and tricks on how you can properly align your projector screen for a perfect viewing experience.

Tip 1: Install the Projector Screen Last

The time to align your projector screen is at the end of your theater room setup. The projector screen can be placed on the wall so that it is centered. From here you can use the on-screen menu and the projector's remote control to adjust the picture. This way your zoom and picture nudge features will work effectively.

Tip 2: Measuring Tape is your Friend

Never try to align your projector screen up without using measuring tape. Precise measurements are required to achieve optimum picture quality. The distance from the projector to the screen, the sight line to the screen and the projector center position can all be determined easily and quickly with a measuring tape.

Tip 3: Teamwork Counts

Aligning a projector screen with the projector is best accomplished with the help of a friend. Stand in the center of the room and have your friend adjust the projector screen. Modestly sized screens are not terribly heavy. If you have a very large screen, you may need another friend to help.

Tip 4: Check and Recheck

Before the final installation of the projector screen is done you should always check that it is still lined up correctly. Use sight lines and measuring tape and friends to determine that this is true. Once you are satisfied you can then install the projector screen with confidence.

Tip 5: Find the Sight Line

The sight line is the optimum viewing position. If you created stadium-style seating in your theater room this becomes tremendously important. The trick is to sit center and stare at the screen. The measuring tape is useful here because someone can pull it to the area of the projector screen. You can then adjust the screen based on the center seat vantage point. With stadium seating you would go to the middle seat in the middle row. Use a tape measure that is level with your eyes and then bring it to the center of the screen as it is currently. You can now adjust it for proper sight lines.

Tip 6: Multiple Vantage Points

Do not be satisfied with just sitting in the center seats. Looking at the projector screen from each seat will provide you with a great alignment to the projector screen. Your friends and family can be of great help with this.
