6 Tips to Remove Bathroom Mold

by DoItYourself Staff

Many people with even the most expensive bathroom suites have to think about how to remove bathroom mold at some point. Mold can make a bathroom smell bad and look unsightly. It can be unhealthy too. The best idea is always get to work on mold soon after it appears. That way your problem doesn’t get out of hand. With this in mind, there are some effective ways of combating mold of which you should be aware.

Tip 1 – Open the Window

Mold especially likes bathrooms because they tend to be damp, warm and humid. You can help make bathrooms less appealing to mold by ventilating them properly. This might mean installing a good ventilation system or it could be as easy as opening the window after a hot bath to allow some of the steam to escape. When cleaning a bathroom of mold, you should certainly make sure that the area is well ventilated.

Tip 2 – Wear Protective Gear when Cleaning Your Bathroom of Mold

Mold can be very dangerous. Breathing in spores can cause asthma allergies and respiratory illness. For that reason it’s wise to be cautious when coming into close contact with it. Cleaning puts you in such a close contact that it is important to take every precaution you can. Wear a mask, gloves and overalls. Think about using a respirator to avoid the possibility of breathing problems.

Tip 3 – Pay Attention to Rugs and Carpet

Having rugs and carpets in a bathroom is not a good idea when it comes to mold infestations. Think about removing any rugs from your bathroom that are affected by mold.

Tip 4 – Use a Specialist Product

Since mold is a fungus, you’ll want to make sure you do everything you can to remove it effectively. Doing half a job will allow the mold to return before you know it. For this job it’s wise not simply to rely on warm water, but to purchase a specially produced mold cleaning solution. These are widely available in stores and not all of them are damaging to the environment. Some are ecologically friendly and you should have a fairly wide selection available.

Tip 5 – Find the Source of the Infestation

There may be mold over a large part of the bathroom if it has been allowed to spread, but it’s usually possible to identify the place where an infestation took hold. Doing so is important because that’s the place that mold will choose to return. This will require the most attention from you in terms of cleaning. To identify the source of a mold infestation it’s a very good idea to dry out the surfaces. This will give a much clearer picture of which parts are worst affected.

Tip 6 – Use a Good Brush

To do a really thorough job of mold removal you should work hard on affected areas with a good brush. Don’t make the mistake of using one that’s too soft or one that’s so tough it will damage surfaces beneath where the mold is growing. Make sure it’s up to the job, and clean it well after using it.
